The great spiritual way of Buddhism originated and flourished in ancient Bihar, where Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. As a result, the region is littered with the remains of stupas, or monastic structures. Mahavira, the Jain leader, was also from this region and attained Nirvana in Pawapuri. Among Hindu religious sites, Bihar has one of the most prominent pilgrimages to Gaya for making offerings to ancestors. The Ramayana and Mahabharata, India's grand epics that are still extremely popular and associated with Hinduism, contain numerous tales about various places in Bihar. Syed Muhammad of Amjhar Sharif, based in Bihar's Aurangabad district, was a prominent representative of the Qadri order, which is now considered one of the state's leading Sufi orders.

Shri Guru Govind Singh Ji Maharaj, the tenth Sikh leader, was born in Patna in 1660. Sikhs regard the Takht Shri Har Mandir Ji Sahib, which Maharaja Ranjit Singh built to commemorate his birthplace, as one of the five 'Akal Takht's.
